In short you find a product that is needed and you promote that product online.

Affiliate marketing is an arrangement between an online merchant and affiliate, in which the affiliate earns a commission for generating sales, leads and or clicks for the merchant’s web site.

2. Do some keyword research to see if there is indeed a market for what you are interested in.
3. You need at least 80 searches a day and when you are just starting out you do not need any more than 30,000 competing websites. This gives you a good chance of success.
4. Do some research to see if there is a product that is a good fit with your interests based on the information you have uncovered.
5. So now you need to choose a domain name which will be your main keyword or have the keyword in it.
6. If you choose a free website like blogger.com or wordpress.com it is still best to use the best keyword as a domain name. If you do good keyword research you will also find out if that keyword will help or make it very difficult for you to compete with the top 10 websites who also use that keyword.
7. Then get a hosting account and set up your website and set about learning how to market your product. You may also choose to use a free website and in that case you do not need hosting.

If you choose to do affiliate or cpa marketing for example you might decide to direct link to the offer you want to promote, but there will most likely be a time when you will need to have a website, either your own or a free one.
